If you are going to buy a used greenhouse, there are several factors that you’ll have to account for. The most important ones are the price and the condition of the unit, but other issues are vital too.

Locating a Used Greenhouse

Your best option is the garden center nearest you. You can also find ads for these units in newspaper or magazines. Of course there is always the Internet. If you decide to go the Net route, read the description carefully.

Detailed pictures are necessary, but the seller should also add information about any parts that aren’t working or if any major repairs have been done.

Examine the Panels

As you look to buy a used greenhouse, look for those with panels made of Plexiglas or plastic. Not only are they effective in filtering ultraviolet rays, but they don’t break. This translates into savings.

Whatever the panel is made of, make sure they’re not broken. Buying second hand greenhouses with broken panels is cheaper. But how much will it cost you to have it repaired? If you end up having to buy new panels, it can set you back a hefty sum.

The Heating System is Important

A heating system is mandatory if you want to cultivate plants in the offseason. Again, you’ll want to buy one with working heating systems. Having it repaired costs time and money. For more effective use of power,

look for solar powered heating systems when you buy a used greenhouse. They cost more than standard heating systems but their power usage will save you cash down the line.

Don’t forget to check the louvers; the greenhouse will need ventilation for plants to flourish.

Size Affects Costs

This is very important. If you think your plant collection will grow, get a larger greenhouse. It can be difficult and costly to buy numerous greenhouses, not to mention time consuming.

But before you buy one, make sure the selected area has room for it. Don’t just select any open space. Exposing the greenhouse to extreme forms of weather may damage your plants. This is particularly true if the greenhouse is quite old.

Other Considerations

If you’re going to buy a used greenhouse, you’ve got to think about what kind of planting you want to do. Are you going to focus on vegetables or flowers? Some greenhouses are designed specifically for these purposes.

Hobby or Professional Use

Almost any type of second hand greenhouse will do for the hobbyist provided it is in good condition. If you’ll be growing plants for business (i.e. selling them) you must scrutinize the unit you’re going to buy.

Another factor that must be weighed in is the weather in your area. If it snows heavily, you’ll need a greenhouse built specifically to handle heavy snow and rain.

The main criterion used when people buy a used greenhouse is the cost. But if you don’t factor in issues like the panel and heating systems, problems can arise. Hence, all these must be accounted for well.

So you’re determined to make your own greenhouse? Now what do you do? You’re probably still trying to figure out exactly what you’ve gotten yourself into and now you’ve got the lovely task of figuring out what steps to take next. Don’t be alarmed. There couldn’t be anything simpler and more rewarding than building your own greenhouse. All you need is a little patience, and a bit of ingenuity, and you will be well on your way to creating a little ‘plant factory’ of your own!

The first thing you need to know before beginning the construction of your greenhouse is what kind you want to build. There are virtually hundreds of options from which to choose. When thinking about how to make your own greenhouse, you’ve got to take into consideration the type of plant life you want to grow inside. Think long and hard. If you’re in the mood for lovely tropical plants, you’re going to want a hot-greenhouse, preferably with glass covering –though plastic will work almost as well (easier to maintain too). If you’re interested in germinating your own seedlings or growing plants that thrive in cooler temperatures, naturally you’re going to invest your time and effort in a cool-greenhouse.

You’re next task is to decide on what exactly you want the style your garden greenhouse to be. Do you want a hoop style greenhouse, which tend to be the cheapest and easiest to build (great for beginners), or perhaps you would like to set up a more traditional vertical sided house. There are lean-to and earth sheltered greenhouse types as well. Do a little research online for a few minutes and I’m sure you’ll find the perfect fit for your situation.

The foundation of your greenhouse is the second most important thing to consider when starting greenhouse construction. Depending on the shape of your greenhouse, you’ll either require a base that’s underground or on the surface. Honestly though, most small greenhouses (around 10′x10′ or so), don’t require full blown concrete foundations. Some pressure treated 2×6 boards should do the trick for the foundation needs of most mini greenhouse designs.

This leads into your next consideration: budget and materials. If you have your heart set on something grandiose and seemingly more professional, you’ll need to set aside at least $3000 –for glass, metal framework, plant furnishings, heating, lighting, and irrigation systems. Now, if you’re more concerned with being able to move your hobby greenhouse as the seasons change you’ll be able to invest a fraction of your traditional greenhouse monies –more along the lines of $500 or less.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the quality of your materials will be sacrificed. In fact, some of the most effective greenhouses are also the least expensive. For instance, plastic covering is just as effective as glass covering in keeping your plant life healthy. When thinking about framework, a cedar-type wood is perfect –it’s the most common and the most versatile medium. Or to avoid dealing with the measuring and splinters, PVC piping is perfect for most mobile greenhouses.

No matter kind of greenhouse you eventually decide to set up, one fact remains…Your garden greenhouse is sure to bring you years and years of joy and satisfaction. Happy gardening!

You can extend the life of your growing season when you grow in a tunnel greenhouse. They are built with high ceilings, and they are called high tunnels. Clear plastic covers the crops, producing a greenhouse effect. The moisture is controlled inside, and sunlight produces the heat which the plastic keeps inside.

Because they are separating your crops from the rest of the outside, diseases are kept at bay. A farmer can save water, as the moisture is retained inside the high tunnel, and the temperature is controlled, as well. This is extremely helpful in those surprise seasons of too much rain, or lower than expected temperatures.

Because you may begin your growing season in March, rather than in June when the weather starts to cooperate, it is well worth spending the approximate two thousand dollars to build one of these greenhouses. Whenever you need to replace the plastic, it will only be around two hundred dollars. You can effectively produce up to three times more than you would during a regular season without the greenhouse. And local growers will love it, as well.

Available in a variety of tunnel shapes, they all have the plastic clear covering to be effective. They can come in a lean-to style, or straight sided, or round. And they come in all sizes, like the small ones will be around 190 feet by 143 feet. The larger ones can be as much as 2,800 feet by 2,218 feet. They can be portable, have multiple tunnels inside, and there are many other shapes and sizes available.

And you can enhance the growing environment with thermostats, fans, automatic shutter, or vented heaters. This is great for generally cooler areas of the region that have very short growing spring seasons. So, for a stronger, better crop, and an extended growing season, try building a high tunnel greenhouse.
